122nd Nationals, What a Weekend!

by Mike Kendra on October 4, 2010

Wow, I just returned home from the Fort and I have to say I had a pretty awesome time! I didn’t spend a lot of time behind the camera lens, or chasing stories, most I just enjoyed my time with friends and shooting. Sometimes I think there aren’t enough hours in the day to skirmish and write my blog. However, I did come home with lots of ideas!

Here are some of my thoughts on the weekend:

The Mill Park

What a nice way to dedicate our property, I do think the mill stone is totally appropriate and in a nice place, all the area needs are a few park benches. My only issue is that the sutlers seem to need to park directly in front of the mill stone, while this won’t be an issue a regional skirmishes, I’m not sure we will be able to appreciate the park during the Nationals unless the area is roped off….

The National Election and Membership Meeting

Four points, first, election meetings are long and drawn out, I wish they would send a runner out each time a race is decided to keep us active while in the barn, instead of announcing all the race winners at once.

Second, darn the barn floor is hard, my feet hurt… I need to bring a chair next time…

Third, an announcement was made about the AED Machine, or Automated External Defibrillator. This is a device designed to help people with cardiac emergencies. A familiarization class was planned to be held every Wednesday night at each National Skirmish. The announcement seemed quite silly to me though, I heard someone remark that the class at this National was quite small, and here we were, hundreds of team commanders and skirmishers with nothing to do but wait around the barn for the vote results. I’m sure we stood there for 15 to 20 minutes just BS-ing. Why didn’t they give all of us a presentation about the thing while we stood there? Oh well…

Lastly, I think we desperately need a new PA system in the barn, I was standing directly in front of the podium and couldn’t hear half of what was said…

Wrap up

I’m so glad that the rain stayed away for the duration of the team events, everything seemed to run nicely.

Overall it was a nice weekend, and my next task is to come up with a list of interviews to be done.

Amen to the rain staying away. Up until last year, we were shooting the revolver team match in a full-blown monsoon about 80% of the time.
