10 Things You Need to Prepare Before Skirmishing Season Begins…

by Mike Kendra on March 1, 2010

Ah, today is the first day of March, winter is winding down, Valentine’s day is past, and in just a few weeks Spring will be here!

Ummmm… You weren’t just sitting around watching the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500, and generally goofing off all winter were you?

(Ahem, Let me dust off my best Gunny impression…)

Have you wasted all those free weekends you had between Christmas and Presidents Day? Gee whiz, you better get cracking! The Early Bird is just days away!

  1. Wake Your Team Commander Up: Hibernation time is over! It’s time to fill out the Nationals Application! It’s time to start making phone calls to see who is getting individual targets. Go! Go! Go!
  2. Heat Up Your Lead Pot: It’s time to make the bullets! Musket bullets, carbine bullets, henry bullets, .69 caliber balls, you have a lot to do, and only a few weeks to get it done. Do you need to make cannon ammo too? I’ve seen some lazy ding dongs, but you take the cake!
  3. Dust Off Your Powder Measure: I sure hope you kept your powder dry. We need clean charge tubes too!
  4. Clean Out Your Gun Box/Cart: Get all those dirty patches out of there, clean off all that Virginia mud (you’ll have plenty of mud to play in down at the range) and don’t forget to replace all those empty cap tins!
  5. Clean Your Gun: This is your Musket, there are many like it but this one is yours! Get that bore shiny and clean, I want to hear your rammer go tink in that breach, BOY! Make sure you’ve got fresh grease in the lock if you need it, just don’t over do it! Make sure that your trigger will pass inspection, I don’t want to hear any whining when the SAC officer checks your gun!
  6. Get To the Range and Practice: What do you mean “I never practice”!!!! Get out there, we’ve got rouge clays to break. How are you ever going to hit a ketchup packet on a backer if you don’t practice!
  7. Get Crisco: We ain’t baking cupcakes boy….. WHAT??!? You don’t you use Crisco?!!? It makes a great lube! I don’t care what it tastes like, just go out and git some!
  8. Get Your Uniform Cleaned: Oh, I forgot. Yes, I remember the last time at the dry cleaners how you argued with that woman about the creases in your trousers… Get Over It! Don’t be a baby… I don’t want to smell your stinky cheese when I’m sighting in a tile!
  9. Put Gas In the Car: We can’t drive all the way to the Fort without any gas in the car, and fill up the weed whacker too while you are at it!
  10. Don’t forget your 2010 N-SSA card! Don’t forget your rain gear! Don’t forget your swimsuit for creeking. NOT THAT ONE, NOBODY WEARS A SPEEDO IN THE CREEK! You need your winter parka for those cold Virginia nights! Don’t Forget Your Head, it’s that thing sitting up on your shoulders! Do I need to remind you of everything!

PS: Don’t forget to attend tonight’s open chat for skirmishers, 9pm to 11pm EST. Here is the link to join in: http://civilwartalk.com/forums/addonchat.php The chat restrictions for non-members will be dropped at about 8pm.

Also, keep your calendars open on Monday, March 15th for our next skirmish chat following the Early Bird Skirmish….

That’s interesting…on my team, the adjutant (me) handles the paperwork.

And you were supposed to mould bullets over the winter. I’ve got nearly a year’s supply moulded up, 3 Skirmishes worth loaded & ready.
